MG Road for under 50 bucks

"If y'all don't 'ave pots of money, there's not much you can do on MG road men", I heard a friend moan. Actually he said yuvarself instead of y'all and paatsu instead of pots (he was from Nellore dishtrict), but I couldn't print that. Suitably challenged, I wandered off to the end of MG road and decided to take a stroll down to see how many places I could still get a satisfying meal at, for under 50 bucks.

First stop- K C Das on Church St. Ok stop screaming, I know those sweets are ridiculously priced. But here's the trick. Step in, sit yourself down and order a plate of luchis or motor kachuri with alurdom and yellow dal. Or maybe a couple of singaras, a rasgulla or three and some deliciously divine mishti doi. Slllurrrrp. When the surly waiter flings the bill at your face, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see that you've only drummed up a bill of about 40 rupees or so! They also sell sweets per piece which work quite well with your budget. Those cashew/pista balls are dangerously priced at 17 bucks apiece though.

Tumble about 20m downhill from KC das and walk into Sheshamahal restaurant. This certainly has to be the pleasantest south indian restaurant for miles. Try their hearty bonda-soup in the evenings. Ok go crazy and throw in a maddur vade, some nippat-chakli and mangalore bajji and wash it all down with some filter coffee. Not more than 35 bucks, I assure you. Happiness joyness! Oh and do try their oota (lunch) section which is actually on the MG side, in a small lane beside Arya bhavan sweets.

Which brings me to Arya Bhavan sweets. Lovely, surly staff, and a variety of low-priced sweets and chaats to choose from. Try their speciality: Baby chaat kachori. A sort of edible flour basket filled with all manner of yummy things. Might burn a hole in your stomach, but not in your wallet. Ha ha. Manchi joku kaadhandi? Also try their excruciatingly sweet malai lassi. Lovely for a brilliant 23 minute sugarbuzz.

For some really great filter coffee, try India coffee depot, a small hole in the wall opposite Premier bookstore on Museum Road. The kindly gentleman there has a strange system. He'll take 5 rupees from you and hand you a doubled paper cup full of piping hot filter coffee. He'll then walk in, tear a coupon ceremoniously out of a book, rip it up into shreds and fling it out of the window, all the time smiling and making small talk as you finish your coffee.

Pani puri my loves? Try the chaat walla right around the corner from India coffee depot. Deeeelicious pani puri (sooji ke hain sir, ek dum mulaayam) for ten bucks, with a sookha poori (with channa, lemon and a magic chaat masala) thrown in for free. The best gabuk-gabuk-ten-rufis-thank-you place ever.

For round-the-clock cheap food, there's no place like Empire. A vast menu, immaculately dressed staff and many, many inebriated clubbers on a Saturday night. Try their shawarma rolls and dosa-chicken combos. Also their yum ghee rice, dal fry, kerala/ceylon parathas, chikken gebaabuh (kabab in Malabari-speak), lychee melba and much much more. Their Arabic restaurant upstairs is a little disappointing, but the food's not bad at all for the price.

For more inexpensive South Indian, try Kaycees down the road. Their lunch thalis, especially the Naarth Indian mini-meals, where you get to choose the gravy that accompanies your fluffy white kulchas, are really quite delicious.

Midway down MG road, it's been business as usual at the India Coffee House. For the past 4000 years. The grouchy waiters, also around the same age, have for some reason become uber polite these days. Gone are the days when they'd bite your head off if you dared to ask for a pepper shaker. They now stand around in an avuncular fashion, and even half salute when you tip them. While their cutlets, sandwiches, coffee and masala dosas are not bad at all, do not miss their slurpily yumptious scrambled eggs. They are arguably the best in Bangalore, and served on toast in VERY chipped china. Super value for money.

Walk down Brigade road and up rest house crescent (or Pecos lane as it is more popularly known) and the first thing you hear is some super cool music from a green spiral staircase. That, my dear friends, is the infamous Pecos - Brigade road's best kept... err non-secret. Step in, and well, step out, if you don't get it. But if you do, welcome to what was once my world. Beautiful (sob sob) music, cheap beer that on a good day tastes like Rosy chechi's dishwater, natural airconditioning (I'm not kidding. Sit by the window that overlooks Pick 'n' Move), a sav crowd and surprisingly affordable food. Try their tacos and sausage steamed rice with your dishwater. Slurp.

A little past Pecos on the left, is the infamous Dubai Plaza that houses the lovely 'Taste of Tibet'. A smash hit with the college crowd, here's where you can gorge on momos, phingsha, tingmo, thupka and all manner of unpronounceable Tibetan things for very little money. You'll soon learn to love the slow motion movements of the staff, the lovely tomato relish and the tinkly Tibetan music that comes free with every meal!

How can I end any food story without a mention of my favourite eatery (mostly for non food related reasons) - Nilgiri's. Walk into the newly refurbished cakeshop and help yourself to puffs, pastries and all manner of yummy things for well under 20 bucks. They now even have pre-packaged dosa-chutney, poori-and-potato sort of deals that you have to zap in the microwave before you eat, which quite frankly look rather yucky. What you might want to check out is their 10-paise-per-gram lunch buffet, where an endearingly grouchy attendant spoons out as much rice, gravy and curry as you want into a plate and charges you by weight. Fascinating, and quite flattering when you notice she's written your weight down as 188 grams.

And that, I think, (besides Ullas refreshments, Brindavan Wotel and the noodle person on Dickenson Rd), brings my cheap and best MG road eateries story to a close. Other places, stories of unimaginable illnesses from eating at said places, anecdotes and observations most welcome!

Sorry man. Was a mess last week, work-wise. And when the storm passed, I forgot off to return your call. Call me! I have low balance. On my phone, that is. My tympanum is just fine.
Kissy.

you left out ajanta hotel!!
Their rasam vade (for around 15 Rs) is yumm...
But remember to sit outside - the inside "air conditioned" six table joint feels horrible....

also, there are a couple of reasonably priced eateries at mittal towers - tango makes decent sandwiches, and there is an outlet that serves good rajasthani type food, I forget the name.

Your post brought back memories of breakfast on Sunday mornings at India Coffee House. They serve the bestest scrambled eggs on toast in the world!!! My standard order was scrambled eggs, then masala dosa followed by filter coffee (slurped from the saucer of course)

You left out Lakeview- a bakery/eatery in MG Road. I remember they used to serve nice omelettes, but I can’t quite recall the price.

Anonymous said...

Lakeview is now not in MG Road anymore. Shocking but true. Now "exists" - barely - in a hole in ghastly St. Mark's Road from what I hear. The Lakeview/Jamal building is being phoenixed.

Can you imagine driving up to Lakeview on St. Marks Road today?!

Total Gold Old Dayz Nostlgia Trip classicficashen wonly now. I used to eat their honeymoon speshels!

oh, some of the ready to eat stuff outside Nilgiris is yumm! There is stuff that you can take on the go and feel heavy! They even have packed fried rice and thayir sadam, no? I tried when I was there.

does anyone belong to the vintage that remembers the blue fox on mg road? it was one hell of a sinfully adult place to go to when one was in one's teens. if memory serves right, they used to have a trumpet in neon on their exterior. and a very mac, very anglo indian 'crooner' a wanna be pam crain.

and there was the peacock or some such for indian stuff at one end of mg road. anyone remember it?

and what became of tiffany? is it still around. i am talking of an era when the movie 'breakfast at tiffany' was mere twenty years old.

and i am sure all of it cost fifty bucks or less back then.

full nostalgia spree, no?

Why this torture? What have your readers done to you? The stomach growls, and the mouth waters, and MG Road is too far away and it is 11 pm at night.

What happened to Indiana? In my college days, I would go there solely to drink up all their mayonase with those yummy burgers. I think it cost me about 25Rs then...don't know about now..

Also, there was this place opposite KCDas which was called "Little Chef" or something like that. It was a garage converted to Chinese place. They had Ambassador seats for chairs and refrigerator doors as table tops. But supremely yummy chinese food for very cheap prices.

But issokay, I laughed off anyway. Not to worry.

That golguppa wala gives me twotwo sookha ones without me asking. YAAY! I feel so important.

The Spanish omelette in Lakeview was the bestest ever. I vant :(

Aha, my beauties! what lov-lovely comments you have left I say! Shortly I will commence prize distribution ceremony to best/most scandalous eatery anecdote on MG road. Kindly note there are no rules to this contest, except please keep price of meal to 50 rs (else kindly reimburse excess amount in installments of two pao bhajis per day)

Haan and all you Rangashankara type fellows, kindly wait a minute for 5 minute. Just I am coming off only. Enough is enough and I've heard too many nice things about it to stay this side of the planet and crib about it being too far anymore. Allan Francis uncle is slightly 5 minutes ago these days anyway.

anoopa: Get off those mushrooms immediately I say. Thu. Mad I am or what to kaas kot chapli haarskofy. Mental.

apu: Oh yes ajanta. Lovely, congratulations. Haan Ive heard about the hawa mahal eateries, will check them out soon :)

anoushka: gabuk is the sound of gulping (pani puri in this case)

dee: Yes no? very pleasant and easy on the palate and for 30 bucks its defly a deal. Haan banni banni I will thins all manner of the above.

pettai maami: Aiyo sorry ma come off immediately.

ahumanbean: Aye raju, kya bolta rey.. chal 500 rupya de de mere Rajess Kanna! Lamba saal jigega tu , de de reyyy.. Clap clap :P

nileena, ahumanbean: Oh yeah about the scrambled eggs. lakeview was lovely, but not cheap by any stretch. Min 60 bucks used to go off, but very nice I agree. Have you tried their "Zissling BrrrowNee Zundaes"? Uyyyo what a lovely they are. death only.

Bikerdude said...

gradwolf: yeah those packaged situations are not happening for me I say. I think the thought of microwaving them and eating and all is sad-ish no?

nigel: Now there's a real old world Bangalore memory! Unfortunately Blue fox closed down in the early eighties. And I read somewhere that an average meal for two cost close to 60 bucks even then! It's been replaced over the years with several new avatars, all preserving the same circular shape. The latest is something called Sphaira that I haven't gone to yet. The earlier L'attitude (bleh name I know) was very happening in the early 2000s with two-two circular dance floors (one retro), but soon got replaced by a dance bar :P Peacock and Tiffanys are still around, though they've moved to residency road (Devatha Plaza). Both still quite nice though a bit run down. Neither counts as an under 50 buck place yet though they're good value for money.

prats, shruti, maami: banni banni thinsthene :)

cluelessness: Indiana (and its sweet mayonnaise) is still very much there, though out of the 50 buck bracket now unfortunately. Abba how much we used to thulp there in college no? Little Chef is gone now though, thanks to Shobhaaaa(aa?) developers :P

a million different peeps: Oh yes Bowring kulfi defly makes it to the list! Aye why you loffing at my gults I say, lovely nellore villaze longwaze I speak ok? Ok :) Lakeview still there ma, take off right and come to St Patrick's complex at the bottom of briggie road.

putti: Corner house aa? Hmm true it just about makes it into the cheap food bracket though not so much nowadays. Amma barthene thaaye, kindly see main note above!

10yearslate: Annavre, kindly to be taking me to the aforementioned khanavali. My treat. I've heard too much about it and wake up at night from dreams of joladha rotti and yenne gaai. Immediately must go.. food.. yennegaai.. mmmmmmmmm

kavitha: Heh heh :P

shilpa: Arre yes, how I can forget that I say. totally delicious stuff there. Always scared theyll go out of business. Yeverybodys, kindly visit calcutta chaats next to pijja hut on brigade road men.

jo: Thanks men- will defly drop by one of these days

nk: That is only Ullas Refreshments pa. Not sure if its open yet but those are defly the rudest bunch of waiters in Blr. "Bega kodi sir, film start agthide" (Please give fast sir, movie is starting)"Ree, nimmanthavro eshto nodiddene. Ill barbekandre time itkond barbeku. Bega geega ella kodakagalla." (Like you how many I have seen I say? Here coming means must come keeping time. Fast geest and all cannot give) types. I think they were shut down if Im not mistaken. yes CP in Empire still rules!

van: Gaaaaaaaaaahahahaha super boss!!! Kohinoor still stands strong and proud btw, thanks for remembering!

Scribblers inc: Arre the dalhis mein chaat-shaat, chole bhature shature, pronthe shonthe, jalebi shalebi axetra axetra milte hain na raste mein? Slurrrrp. Ok escuse me Im coming to the Dalhi. Honk honk :)

Ah! Can somebody tell me the name of the Chinese restaurant on the corner of Brigade Road and Residency Road? near where the rickshaws wait? It has strange 1970's science fiction type pictures of topless girls inside? Once my poor father took me there by mistake and was terribly embarassed because he did not realise it was shadyish until we were right in. Then boyfriend took me there once also not realizing it was shady, and we found that there were many drunk men inside, eating Chinese foods and drinking lots of old monk and -- seriously -- dancing on the tables.

Anonymous said...

@ Scribbler: That's the faamus Chun Lung. Waat you are saying shady I say...naatatall. Cheap-and-beshtt is waat I would call it. Cut-price drinksu and not-bad snakesu and (last time I was there) an enormous Bipasha Basu hoarding staring at you and your drink from across the road.

Anonymous said...

Chin Lung I mean. Bledy keyboard.

Sanchia said...

Chin Lung, ah yes! But have you been to it when there were men dancing (very happy dancing) on tables? Quite a sight. I do not recommend it for females of which I am one. But it is very cheap, agreed, and quite best too for cheapness.

Anonymous said...

Somehow I can only remember the bars ;-) I say, wonder why.

Good old Carnival - in the impossible-to-believe-there's-a-bar-in-here-unless-you're-inside-it land between the petrol station and the road leading to Garuda. Recently demolished (like Victoria Wottal, sob sob waaaah) to doubtless make way for another garish commercial caamplex. Most snakes in Carnival were sub-50 including some of the fiss and the sikken.

And oh, the stories I have about Victoria Wottal, sob sob waaaah.

Anonymous said...

@ Scribbler: Natatall. Only last time I was there the long table to the left of the entrance (1st floor) was covered with a covey of giggling gerls and their baays. Then only I thought I must come more often.

@ Scribbler: At night only I went and saw girls and Bipasha. Though Bipasha became harder to see as it got dark and the girls got prettier as the drinks went down. Nowadays girls are drinking everywhere I say...I saw some in Carnival too.

Anyone recalls Berry's? Jusstt nextt to Night Watchman, Church St side. Upstairs. Closed down I think. When we got bored of "Sheesh" Mahal and the Chung Wah we'd go there for lunch. Naarth Indian thaali for around 50 bucks.

Also, I used to LOVE Little Chef. And that other Opera House place Chinese place. Both closed.

Even Supermarket you'll get off one or two Vada-Pav for a fifty. Not meal types though.

There is also this place on Church Street - Kaycees I think where I ated this BLOODY HUGE table sized dosa for 16 bucks. Yes, desperately hungry and poor. But it was decent. Don't know if it still exists. Plis to be checking and informing.

Somehow I never dared to enter Kohinoor. Don't know why though.

What all of you angling Barton steps?

Why no one remembers Planet M's Kannada sextion? Necksht to Classical Music sextion? Personally, I went to HMV store after that scarred me. No sophistication only, shady metaphorical peoples. Using music store and all.

But that was circa 2005, when I got decent pocket money. Who knows now?

Then there was some Nikhil's Ice Junction in Brigade, next to Wimpy's I think. Vairy shady with BS (Britney Spears, BullShit also) music and all.

BeeDee: I know newnew gabbu Lakeview is there. But who goes? Sadness comes.

Bikerdude said...

kumar: Neither of them is in the 50 buck bracket anymore da.. sad no? Besides wimpys is now dance bar. The other day cousin and I went means fellow at door was like Sir, madam is not allowed sir :P.

van scribbler: Chin Lung itseems thu where all you go.
Berrys all long gone ma. Nowdays two dogs (actual) sleep on steps.
Stars and stripes is adjacent to Indianas. Not half as good though.

karen: myre lines not liking I say. Some 4 times crow has pooped in dosa plate. So solpa not happening any more. All foreign chains and all you mention means immediate disqualificaiton ok? ok.

anita: Thanks ma. come we will split meagre proceeds on half plate idli

anoushka: Are you talking abotu coconut grove?? Its mallu, not chettinad. Little conphusing you are I think.

prats: I think macs on church st sang its swan song after all of us went there and bolsufied them after last day of college. Correct abt parking fee except we didnt have bike so no such luck :(

pri: Thu you and your keer kadam I say. I went and tried because you died so much over it and it is rasgulla inside rasgulla with grated rasgulla on top. whats use.

ahumanbean: Whoa!!! And I thought it was edgy enough eating apple pie at the old (pre mota) Only place on brigade road next to the coffin maker! With that, youre slightly leading. Van, pull your socks up I say and say us off better anecdote.

cluelessness: Come off ma, enough US shoe S and all.

kavitha, ahumanbean, a million different people and other curious parties: What men? I meant for eating kadle puri, what you thought? :P :P

sloganmurugan: Yes kohinoor has been covered by van and his spiked thums up bottle already :)

a million: Ohho such things also happen in casette shopsa? Never I knew. My most traumatic experience in HMV house was giving long lecture on parveen sultana to back of lady whom i thought was friend and see means some one else with 'dude wtf are you on?' expression has turned and glared at me.

Ayyo BD waat I will compete with aal these fart-inducing beans I say, human or udderwise. (Don't offence, in my house beans = gobar gas plant wonly). In late 80s while they were having bheja-shake I waas yinnocent baay in ours north coastal Andhra eating Rs. 5/- friedu fomfrettu on beachu.

Came to NB wonly in '96 so can't able to compete in nostalgia stakes, saari.

@ BD: Old Only Place you never drank beeraa? Appil pie andaal you are saying. Bestwas beerinteacup no?

Shady Jewel Box I aalso remember. Jeshtt one AC groaning away in the corner. Lunch I ate there once a month - as soon as meagre salary came. Dark in day only - no need for Barton steppulu. Waiter used to see my tie and serve, otherwise such eng-looking baays were kicked out at the door only.

anita: Yes no? Earlier you'd get patties, now you get patsies thats all. small difference :P nothng to beat those dyed-blond women leaning off the rails of Tom's billiard parlour (now some random still-to-be-commissioned mall next to Cauvery arts and cratfs) and smoking cigarettes on long stemmed holders though. Ridiculously funny :P Idlis- anytime!!

Shall I spam and make this 100 plus comments?

Karan said...

i think so.

Karan said...

except that this word verification is very sad.

Karan said...

How do they even make up pictures with such ridiculous letters?

for ex: current word: xphnu

Karan said...

Even worse is when the assholes make it case sensitive.

Karan said...

Or sometimes when you don't understand the letters only. And when you're confused if it is a zero or an 'o'.

Karan said...

I have also taken effort to e-mail people and tell them how annoying it is but no one has listened so far.

Karan said...

no one hates it as much?

strange no?

Karan said...

@ Pri: somehow this reminds me of the times when we used to spam peoples Orkut scrapbooks, no?

Karan said...

and I just realised this will also be going in some few million inboxes of people who have asked for e-mail notifications.

Karan said...

so no more random messages.

Karan said...

100. :)

Really cool man. I had an idea that the crowd who visits MG Road-Brigade-Church street eat only at those minimum 100 Rs hotels in Church street or Brigade road - and I was slowly digesting the idea of eating from Queens (for lack of other options) during all the weekends I spend at Blossoms & Strand. Great to know that there are other great minds out there :-)
